Self-Portraits

For these self-portraits I thought it was important to not have my face in the picture at all. We identify ourselves and others with faces and it having a standard self-portrait was not what I was going for. Instead I did one of our largest identifiers yet one of the most overlooked. Our fingerprints. Consistently used to identify us in higher institutions such as the police and government our fingertips are just as, if not more, a symbol of our identification then our faces. It’s easy to change a face. A fingerprint is a lot harder to fake.

For the collaborative photos we came together and Maddie convinced me to pull further away from the macro lens and feature more body shots. I wanted to play with the idea that the viewer wouldn’t be able to decipher if the photograph was actually of me or not, that they would just have to take me on my word. That’s why every photo is so out of focus. Usually we are looking for clarity in our images, much like the photos above, looking for detail and definition. Instead I wanted to give the viewer almost a blur of an image and say “That’s me” to see how people would react.
